Es Castell

Es Castell is the most easterly village in Spain. Originally built under the Fort of San Felip, it is a town steeped in history.

Originally named Georgetown (after George III) by the British during their second occupation and built in square block military style, it still retains a colonial feel. Renamed Villacarlos when the island reverted to Spanish rule, locals call it Es Castell (the Castle) because of the proximity to the previously demolished Fort of San Felip.

The town's history is strongly reflected in its architecture and setting. The main square, Placa de S"Esplanada, is formerly the parade ground. This is lined with Georgian buildings and features the elegant British clock tower, the plum-red town hall and military barracks, which is now a museum filled with a selection of military memorabilia, maps, 18th century English furniture and model reconstructions of the Fort.

The village is flanked by two harbours - Calas Fonts and Cala Corb, where you can enjoy waterfront dining from one of the many restaurants and bars situated here.

You can also catch a boat which takes you to the Port of Mahon.

Es Castell is a bustling village with plenty to offer - historical interest, restaurants, bars, supermarkets and some nightlife. There are market days twice a week and also an annual fiesta at the end of July.

A turnoff before the entrance to Es Castell leads to the prehistoric village of Trepuco. This features Talayots - large stone mounds, which perhaps were used as watchtowers and Taulas - huge stone tablets, balanced quite precisely in the shape of a T. Similarily to Stonehenge, no-one knows what these signify and how they were positioned so exactly. Beside this, part of the prehistoric village has been excavated.
